Raakajilm in the Mallee

Raakajilm sits among red sand dunes and Mallee and Pine woodlands on the edge of Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, 60 kilometres south-east of Mildura, Victoria. The property is bisected by Raakajilm Creek, an ephemeral waterway connected to the Murray River and the broader Hattah Lakes system. Along the creek line and floodplain, diverse Blackbox woodlands grow over a grassy, chenopod understorey.

The largest population on Earth

The property is home to the largest population in the world of the Mallee Bronze Azure butterfly, and to other threatened fauna. Raakajilm is fully fenced to manage grazing pressure from kangaroos, pigs and goats, and is a refuge for threatened flora.

Landscape restoration

Raakajilm has been our home and our life's work since 2001. We've fenced, planted and celebrated every inch of this 490-hectare property.

Revegetation and conservation fencing are the keys to restoration. You can follow the journey through our revegetation and conservation-fencing diaries.

A cultural landscape

Cared for long before us

Raakajilm sits on the unceded lands of the Latji Latji people, and protects a rich cultural landscape. We're grateful for the support and knowledge shared by local Traditional Owners in our conservation work.

Our partners

We don't do this alone

Raakajilm is permanently protected by a Trust for Nature conservation covenant, and its restoration has been backed by the Jesse Chaplin Burch Trust since 2021. Each year, students from Carey Baptist Grammar School camp and plant with us, alongside our own Friends of Mallee Conservation.

You could be the next steward

Future-proofing the Mallee

Raakajilm has been our home and our life's work for 25 years. We've fenced, planted and celebrated every inch of this 490-hectare property, and we want its future to be as rich as its past.

We're now actively planning the next chapter, and we're open to the right arrangement with the right people. That might mean selling to a conservation-minded individual or family, transferring stewardship to a land trust or conservation organisation, or a staged transition where we stay involved, sharing knowledge and walking alongside a new custodian until they're ready to carry it forward.

We're not in a hurry. We're looking for the right fit, people or organisations who share our commitment to this landscape.
